This Medical and Scientific Editing masterclass is designed to improve your editing skills for scientific and medical clients. This two-part masterclass is essential for editors who work with—or are planning to work with—scientific or medical content.
Part 1 covers how scientific and medical editing differ from other forms of editing in terms of audience, style and structure. Scientific and medical clients require precise language and terminology, attention to detail and accuracy in the use of words and numbers. This masterclass will help you learn the essential skills needed to edit for clarity, precision and consistency, as well as providing valuable scientific and medical terminology knowledge so you can provide high-quality services to your clients.
Part 2 explores the world of professional editing in the scientific and medical fields. We’ll explore the demand for editing services in these fields and help you understand your clientele and what is important to them. You’ll learn best practices for editors, including the role of the editor, professional standards and codes of practice. We also cover accreditations and the exam for BELS—the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences—to provide a thorough insight into what’s expected of professional editors in these fields.
This masterclass provides specific guidance for scientific and medical editing, including language for different audiences, ethical standards and different types of study designs you may encounter. We also cover grammar and language issues that scientific and medical editors often face, as well as statistics and data visualisation in documents. The masterclass will give you a solid understanding of the most commonly used statistics and data types and how to present them. You’ll also learn how to support English as an Additional Language (EAL) clients as an editor and be informed about professional development options to enhance your skills as a scientific or medical editor.
